In Rhode Island, the IRS rule is simple: your vehicle must be picked up on or before December 31 for your car donation to count toward this year’s tax return. With OceanState Donor, benefiting Heritage for the Blind, pickups run Monday–Saturday all through December, including Christmas week. In most Rhode Island metro areas, we can schedule same-day or next-day pickup when you contact us before early afternoon on a weekday. To be safe and secure a December 31 slot, we strongly recommend you call or submit our 2-minute form by December 27. You’ll get free towing and a tax receipt; all you need is a signed title.
OceanState Donor is local to Rhode Island donors from Providence, Cranston, Warwick, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, Newport, East Providence, Cumberland, North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Bristol, and beyond. Whether your car is parked in Federal Hill, the East Side, Elmhurst, Aquidneck Island, or along Route 2, we’ll come to you—no inspection, no emissions test, no repairs required. Your donated vehicle supports Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired, while you clear your driveway and gain a potential tax deduction. If you’re searching in November or December, now is the moment: lock in your pickup date before the year ends and keep your 2024 deduction on track.

Year-end tax deduction facts
December 31 controls which tax year
For vehicle donations, the IRS looks at the date the charity takes possession. If your car is picked up on or before December 31, it can generally be claimed on this year’s return. A January pickup usually means the deduction applies to next year.
IRS Form 1098-C for larger deductions
When a donated vehicle is sold and the claimed deduction is more than the IRS threshold, the charity issues Form 1098-C or similar documentation. Your tax preparer uses this to substantiate your non-cash charitable contribution with the reported sale information.
Deduction usually equals sale price
In most cases, the maximum deduction you can claim equals the amount the charity receives when your vehicle is sold, not an estimate like Kelley Blue Book. Your receipt will show this figure once the sale is completed for use on your tax return.
Itemizing on Schedule A
To benefit from a car donation tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on your federal return using Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. A tax professional can help you decide whether itemizing with your charitable donations makes sense.
30-day acknowledgment requirement
For many vehicle donations, the charity must provide a written acknowledgment within about 30 days of receiving the vehicle or its sale. Keep this letter or form in your records; you will need it to support your deduction if the IRS ever requests documentation.
